My New Home

March 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I can’t believe it’s been five months since I wrote in this blog.  So much has happened in that time, I don’t know where to begin.  So, I will just touch on the highlights, starting with my new home.

I got my dream house for an amazingly low price.  Between me offering cash, and the owner being in a hurry to sell, I was moving in within 3 weeks of making my offer!

The sale itself was very interesting.  The woman who owned the house is 81, and has been suffering with Alzheimer’s which has grown progressively worse over the last few years.  She was getting so forgetful over the last year that she had a live-in sitter who helped her out.

Then, a month before the house went up for sale, she fell off the porch steps and broke her hip.  Between the physical injury, and her mental deterioration, the person who is her power of attorney had her moved into a nursing home and put her house up for sale to pay for her new accommodations.

They must have been in a hurry for money because nobody tried to ‘haggle’ my offer.

It’s kind of sad really.  The real estate agent said the woman has no living relatives. No one to visit her or to take over her home which I’m told has always belonged to her family.  I’m the first ’stranger’ who has owned it.

Anyway, three weeks after making my offer I closed and started moving in.  I didn’t take any furniture from my parent’s home because the furniture that was already in the house was included in the home’s purchase price.

That left me with all of my clothes, my favorite kitchen utensils for cooking, my desktop and laptop computers, and of course Jynx the cat.  I made the whole move in one trip with a relatively small U-Haul and help from Elizabeth.

Of course, I replaced all of the mattresses and box springs with new ones, and I had the walls repainted and gave the house a thorough cleaning.  Then, I purchased some pictures, chimes, and hanging things to personalize the place.

My parent’s home is vacant right now.  I’m planning on renting it out but haven’t quite gotten myself into the frame of mind to let a stranger live there yet.  In the meantime, I hired a woman to dust it once a week and open the windows while she is there working, to keep the air inside fresh.

Everything was wonderful for me in September and October!  I was settling in quite nicely and Jynx loved his new ‘hunting’ grounds.  Five acres is massive to me after living on a small lot in town, it must seem like paradise to Jynx!

Then came November and the motorcycle accident.  I’ll pick up on that in my next post.
